How This Guide Works

We're not ranking these clubs or making subjective judgments about quality. Every family's situation is different — what matters is finding the right fit based on your location, your child's age and competitive level, and your family's budget and schedule.

For each club, we list factual information: location, leagues, and gender. Use this as a starting point, then visit clubs, watch practices, and talk to other parents. Our guide on how to choose a club covers what to look for, and our coach evaluation guide has specific questions to ask.

For families new to club soccer, our recreational vs. travel soccer guide explains the differences, and our age-by-age guide covers what to expect at each stage. If cost is a factor, see our club soccer budget guide. For the full statewide view including Pittsburgh, the Lehigh Valley, and Central PA, see our Pennsylvania state guide. For clubs across the river in New Jersey, see our Central NJ guide, Northern NJ guide, or NYC Metro guide.

Understanding the Philadelphia Soccer Landscape

League Structure

The Philadelphia area's competitive soccer landscape is layered:

  • MLS NEXT: FC DELCO (Wayne) is the only Philadelphia-area club competing in MLS NEXT, the top boys development pathway connected to Major League Soccer. FC DELCO was an original U.S. Soccer Development Academy member and has won multiple national championships. The Philadelphia Union Academy also operates an MLS NEXT program from Chester, but functions as a scouted professional academy rather than a traditional tryout club.
  • ECNL: Six clubs field ECNL Boys teams in the Mid-Atlantic conference: Penn Fusion (West Chester), Philadelphia Ukrainian Nationals (North Wales), PA Rush (Doylestown), Council Rock United (Richboro), West Chester United, and Yardley Makefield (Morrisville). Penn Fusion and Ukrainian Nationals also field ECNL Girls teams. FC DELCO and Yardley Makefield compete in the ECNL Regional League.
  • Girls Academy: PA Rush is the only full Girls Academy member in the Philadelphia area. Huntingdon Valley AA competes in the Girls Academy ASPIRE development tier. For how Girls Academy compares to other pathways, see ECNL vs Girls Academy and Girls Academy vs DPL.
  • USL Academy: Philadelphia Lone Star F.C. fields USL Academy Boys teams, connecting to the USL professional pyramid.
  • NPL: Philadelphia Surf competes in the Mid-Atlantic Premier League as part of the NPL pathway under US Club Soccer.
  • EDP Soccer: The dominant regional league. The majority of competitive clubs in the Philadelphia area play in EDP across multiple age groups. EDP also operates The National League as a higher qualifying tier within its structure. Over 25 Philadelphia-area clubs compete in EDP.

Geographic Regions

Philadelphia's club soccer scene breaks into five distinct areas:

Philadelphia proper: The city itself has 20+ programs ranging from EDP competitors like Steel United PA and Philadelphia SC to community-based clubs serving specific neighborhoods. The competitive landscape in the city is more fragmented than the suburbs, with many smaller organizations.

Bucks County (North/Northeast): The strongest concentration of top-tier clubs. PA Rush, Council Rock United, and Yardley Makefield all field ECNL Boys teams. Falls SC, Southampton SA, and Buckingham United compete in EDP. Families in lower Bucks County near the New Jersey border may also consider clubs in Central NJ.

Montgomery County (Northwest): Philadelphia Ukrainian Nationals (North Wales) fields ECNL Boys and Girls teams from their 39-acre facility, and Huntingdon Valley AA provides the Girls Academy ASPIRE pathway. FC Montco, PA Mutiny Gold, and King of Prussia SC are the primary EDP competitors. The county bridges Philadelphia proper and the northern suburbs.

Delaware County (Southwest): FC DELCO is the region's only MLS NEXT club and one of its most established programs. Radnor SC and Rose Tree Soccer Club also compete in EDP. The YSC Academy and YSC Sports campus in Wayne is a significant training facility.

Chester County (West): Penn Fusion and West Chester United give the western suburbs two ECNL Boys options. Lionville SC, Phoenixville Area SC, and Coventry SA round out the EDP scene. Families in western Chester County near the Lancaster area have fewer local options.

Cross-River Options (New Jersey)

Families in Philadelphia — especially those in lower Bucks County or near the Delaware River bridges — may also consider South Jersey clubs. Cherry Hill FC, SJEB FC (Medford), and other clubs in Central NJ and Northern NJ are within commuting distance. The NYC Metro guide covers the broader bi-state region.

Tryout Season

Most Philadelphia-area clubs hold tryouts in late April through June for the following fall season. Some clubs offer winter or spring tryouts for mid-season openings. Check individual club websites or the ClubScout tryout calendar for specific dates. For tips on preparing, see our tryout guide.

Cost Considerations

Club soccer costs in the Philadelphia area vary widely by level. Clubs competing in national leagues (ECNL, Girls Academy) typically cost $3,000-$6,000+ per year including tournament travel. EDP-level clubs generally range from $1,500-$4,000. Town travel programs can be under $1,000. For a detailed breakdown of what goes into these costs, see our travel soccer cost guide and budget guide. Families managing multiple players should also check our multiple kids in club soccer guide.

What to Do Next

  1. Narrow by county and level. Use the tables above to find clubs near you that match your child's competitive level.
  2. Check ClubScout profiles. Each linked club name takes you to their full profile with parent reviews, contact info, and more detail.
  3. Attend tryouts. Most clubs hold tryouts in May-June for the following fall season. See our tryout guide for what to expect.
  4. Talk to current families. Ask about practice schedules, travel expectations, and the actual costs beyond published fees.
  5. Read reviews. Parent reviews on ClubScout give you an unfiltered look at what it's actually like to be part of a club.

If you're new to club soccer entirely, start with our guide on recreational vs. travel soccer and our age-by-age breakdown to understand when and whether to make the move. If your child is already playing and considering a switch, that guide covers what to watch for.
