Club Soccer in Pennsylvania: A Parent's Complete Guide (2026)

ClubScout Team

TL;DR: Pennsylvania has 200 clubs on ClubScout, with 73 holding verified league affiliations across 12+ leagues. The state runs two separate soccer ecosystems 300 miles apart: Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. ECNL (9 clubs), MLS NEXT (3 clubs plus the Philadelphia Union Academy), and Girls Academy (6 clubs) all operate here. EDP dominates eastern PA with 50 clubs. FC DELCO is the top boys development pathway in eastern PA (MLS NEXT, ECNL-RL). Penn Fusion Soccer Academy is the broadest top-tier club (ECNL Boys + Girls). Beadling SC in Pittsburgh holds both MLS NEXT and Girls Academy membership. The Union Academy in Chester offers substantial financial aid (over 80% of students receive scholarships through partner school YSC Academy). Five distinct regions, annual costs from about $750 at the competitive level to $6,000+ at the top tier. This guide covers every affiliated club, organized by competitive tier and geographic region.

What Makes Pennsylvania Different

Pennsylvania is one of the largest states in the Northeast for club soccer, but it doesn't function like one state. A few things set it apart.

Two state associations. Pennsylvania is one of two states in the Northeast (along with New York) with two separate youth soccer associations: EPYSA (Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Association) covers the eastern 36 counties, and PA West Soccer covers the western 31 counties. The boundary runs roughly along the Susquehanna River corridor. Different registration systems, different state cups, different competitive structures. This split shapes everything about how club soccer works here.

MLS academy pipeline. The Philadelphia Union Academy in Chester, PA participates in MLS NEXT and is paired with YSC Academy (a private school) — over 80% of students receive scholarships, with 50% on full rides. Three other PA clubs hold MLS NEXT membership: FC DELCO (Wayne), PA Classics (Manheim), and Beadling SC (Pittsburgh). That's four MLS NEXT pathways across three regions of the state, which is strong for any state in the country.

Two soccer ecosystems, 300 miles apart. Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are about 5 hours apart by car. Philly runs through EDP and Mid-Atlantic ECNL. Pittsburgh runs through PA West Soccer with a completely different competitive structure. Central PA (Lancaster, Harrisburg) sits between them but has its own identity. This is nothing like the compact geography of New Jersey, Connecticut, or Massachusetts.

EDP dominates the east, not the west. 50 PA clubs compete in EDP, but they're almost all east of the Susquehanna. Western PA has very few EDP or TNL clubs in our data. Unlike New Jersey where EDP blankets the entire state with 116 clubs, Pennsylvania's east/west divide is real.

Lancaster: the quiet hub. Lancaster County has 11 clubs, more than Bethlehem, Harrisburg, or Erie. That includes DPL (Keystone FC), USL Academy (Lancaster FC, Lancaster Inferno), NPL (FC Dutchmen), and Girls Academy (Keystone FC) representation. For a mid-size city, that's remarkable depth.

Leagues Active in Pennsylvania

Top-Tier National Leagues

ECNL — Nine PA clubs compete in ECNL Boys: Penn Fusion Soccer Academy (West Chester), Philadelphia Ukrainian Nationals (North Wales), PA Rush (Doylestown), Council Rock United Soccer (Richboro), West Chester United SC (West Chester), Yardley Makefield Soccer (Morrisville), FMFooty (Bethlehem), Rage SC Office (Leesport), and YMS TEC (Fallsington). Penn Fusion and Ukrainian Nationals field both ECNL Boys and ECNL Girls teams. For how ECNL compares to other top leagues, see our ECNL vs Girls Academy comparison and DPL vs ECNL comparison.

MLS NEXT — Three PA clubs hold MLS NEXT membership: FC DELCO (Wayne), PA Classics (Manheim), and Beadling SC (Pittsburgh). FC DELCO also competes in ECNL-RL Boys, making it the top boys development club in eastern PA. Beadling SC, founded in 1898, is one of the oldest clubs in the country. The Philadelphia Union Academy operates its own MLS NEXT program in Chester. For how MLS NEXT compares to ECNL, see our MLS NEXT vs ECNL comparison.

Girls Academy — Six PA clubs compete in Girls Academy: PA Rush (Doylestown), FC Pittsburgh Soccer Club (Leetsdale), Beadling SC (Pittsburgh), Century United Soccer (Pittsburgh), PA Classics (Manheim), and Keystone FC (Lancaster). Two clubs hold GA ASPIRE membership (the development tier): Huntingdon Valley AA and Black Diamond FC (Wilkes-Barre). See Girls Academy vs DPL for how GA compares to DPL for girls, and ECNL vs Girls Academy for the top-tier girls comparison.

Regional and Tier-2 Leagues

DPL (Development Player League)Keystone FC (Lancaster) is the only PA club currently in ClubScout's DPL data. Keystone also holds Girls Academy membership, making it the most league-diversified club in Central PA. See our DPL vs ECNL comparison.

NAL (National Academy League)Rage SC Office (Leesport) holds NAL membership alongside ECNL Boys.

NPL (National Premier Leagues) — Two PA clubs compete in NPL: Philadelphia Surf (Philadelphia) and FC Dutchmen (Lancaster).

USL Academy / USL YouthLancaster FC (USL Academy Boys), Lancaster Inferno (USL Academy Girls), Reading United AC (USL Academy Boys + USL Youth), Philadelphia Lone Star F.C. (USL Academy Boys), Lehigh Valley United (USL Youth), and Pennsylvania Classics (USL Youth). Reading United AC and Lancaster Inferno are connected to professional USL teams, providing youth-to-professional pathways.

EDP (Eastern Development Program) — EDP is the dominant competitive league in eastern Pennsylvania with 50 affiliated clubs. Headquartered in East Brunswick, NJ, EDP is the backbone of competitive play east of the Susquehanna. For how EDP compares to other regional leagues, see our ECNL-RL vs EDP vs NECSL comparison.

TNL (The National League) — 33 PA clubs hold TNL membership, often alongside EDP. Many clubs compete in both leagues simultaneously.

Geographic Regions

Where you live in Pennsylvania determines your practical club options more than in almost any other state. The five-hour drive between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh means most families are choosing within their region, not across the entire state.

Philadelphia Metro (SE PA)

Bucks, Montgomery, Delaware, Chester, and Philadelphia counties. This is the densest club soccer market in the state, and it's where the majority of ECNL, MLS NEXT, and top-tier clubs are concentrated.

Key characteristics:

  • Highest club density: Philadelphia alone has 21 clubs on ClubScout
  • Home to ECNL Boys + Girls (Penn Fusion, Ukrainian Nationals), MLS NEXT (FC DELCO), and Girls Academy (PA Rush)
  • EDP is the dominant competitive league, with 25+ area clubs
  • Some families consider New Jersey clubs across the river

Top-tier clubs in this region: Penn Fusion Soccer Academy (West Chester, ECNL Boys + Girls), Philadelphia Ukrainian Nationals (North Wales, ECNL Boys + Girls), PA Rush (Doylestown, ECNL Boys + Girls Academy), FC DELCO (Wayne, MLS NEXT + ECNL-RL), Council Rock United Soccer (Richboro, ECNL Boys), West Chester United SC (West Chester, ECNL Boys), Yardley Makefield Soccer (Morrisville, ECNL Boys), YMS TEC (Fallsington, ECNL Boys), Huntingdon Valley AA (GA ASPIRE)

Commute reality: The Schuylkill Expressway (I-76), Blue Route (I-476), and Route 202 corridor can turn a 15-mile drive into a 45-minute crawl during evening practice hours. Factor commute time into your club search.

For the full breakdown of every club in this region, see our Philadelphia club guide.

Lehigh Valley / Northeast PA

Lehigh, Northampton, Monroe, Luzerne, and Lackawanna counties. Bethlehem (7 clubs), Allentown (3), Easton (2), Scranton (3), Wilkes-Barre (2). This region has MLS NEXT representation through the Union's affiliate program.

Key characteristics:

  • ECNL Boys through FMFooty in Bethlehem
  • Strong EDP and TNL presence throughout the valley
  • Northeast PA (Scranton, Wilkes-Barre) is more isolated, with fewer league-affiliated options
  • GA ASPIRE pathway through Black Diamond FC in Wilkes-Barre

Top-tier clubs in this region: FMFooty (Bethlehem, ECNL Boys)

Notable clubs: Lehigh Valley United (Bethlehem, USL Youth + EDP + TNL), Black Diamond FC (Wilkes-Barre, GA ASPIRE)

Central PA

Lancaster, Dauphin, York, Berks, Cumberland, and Centre counties. Harrisburg (6 clubs), Lancaster (11 clubs), York (6), Reading (3), State College (2), Hershey (1). Lancaster is the surprise hub of this region with depth that rivals much larger cities.

Key characteristics:

  • Lancaster has 11 clubs, including DPL, USL Academy, Girls Academy, and NPL representation
  • PA Classics (Manheim) is the anchor club, spanning the region with MLS NEXT and Girls Academy membership
  • Strong EDP and TNL presence, especially along the I-83 and Route 30 corridors
  • Rage SC Office (Leesport) holds both ECNL Boys and NAL membership
  • State College (Penn State area) has limited club options despite the large population

Top-tier clubs in this region: Rage SC Office (Leesport, ECNL Boys + NAL), PA Classics (Manheim, MLS NEXT + Girls Academy + EDP + TNL), Keystone FC (Lancaster, DPL + Girls Academy + EDP)

Notable clubs: Lancaster FC (USL Academy Boys + EDP + TNL), Lancaster Inferno (USL Academy Girls + EDP + TNL), Reading United AC (USL Academy Boys + USL Youth), FC Dutchmen (Lancaster, NPL)

Pittsburgh Metro (SW PA)

Allegheny and surrounding counties. Pittsburgh (10 clubs), Leetsdale, Mars, Monroeville, Wexford. A completely different soccer ecosystem from eastern PA, running through PA West Soccer rather than EDP.

Key characteristics:

  • Beadling SC holds both MLS NEXT and Girls Academy membership — the anchor club for the region, founded in 1898 (one of the oldest in the country)
  • Three Girls Academy clubs: FC Pittsburgh Soccer Club, Beadling SC, Century United Soccer
  • Different competitive structure from eastern PA (PA West Soccer territory, not EDP)
  • Fewer league-affiliated options overall, but strong top-tier depth for girls

Top-tier clubs in this region: Beadling SC (Pittsburgh, MLS NEXT + Girls Academy), FC Pittsburgh Soccer Club (Leetsdale, Girls Academy), Century United Soccer (Pittsburgh, Girls Academy)

Notable club: Pittsburgh Riverhounds is connected to the USL Championship professional team, though we don't have verified league affiliations for their youth program on ClubScout yet.

Northwest PA

Erie and Crawford counties. 7 clubs, all without verified league affiliations on ClubScout. This is primarily a recreational and entry-competitive market. Families seeking top-tier competition will likely need to travel to Pittsburgh (about 2 hours) or consider clubs in Ohio.

Top-Tier Clubs: ECNL, MLS NEXT, and Girls Academy

These 14 clubs hold membership in at least one of the top national leagues (ECNL Boys, ECNL Girls, MLS NEXT, or Girls Academy). These are the highest levels of club-based competition available in Pennsylvania.

What top-tier means in practice: These clubs compete in national showcases, travel beyond the Northeast for league play, and operate year-round programs. Annual costs at this level typically range from $3,000 to $6,000+. Rosters are selective, and tryouts are competitive. For more on what to expect at each age, see our age-by-age guide and tryout preparation guide.

Beadling SC is the standout dual-pathway club. Based in Pittsburgh and founded in 1898, Beadling holds both MLS NEXT and Girls Academy membership — a rare combination that gives Pittsburgh families top-tier options for both boys and girls in a single organization.

FC DELCO is the top boys pathway in eastern PA. Based in Wayne (Delaware County), FC DELCO holds MLS NEXT and ECNL-RL Boys membership, making it the premier boys development club in the Philadelphia metro.

Penn Fusion has the broadest ECNL coverage. Penn Fusion Soccer Academy in West Chester is the only PA club with both ECNL Boys and ECNL Girls, giving families a single-club option for top-tier boys and girls development.

Girls Academy depth is notable. Six PA clubs hold Girls Academy membership across three regions: Philadelphia metro (PA Rush), Central PA (PA Classics, Keystone FC), and Pittsburgh (FC Pittsburgh Soccer Club, Beadling SC, Century United Soccer). That's strong geographic coverage for girls' top-tier play. See ECNL vs Girls Academy to compare the two girls' pathways.

Union Academy offers substantial financial aid. The Philadelphia Union Academy in Chester operates its own MLS NEXT program paired with YSC Academy. Over 80% of students receive scholarships, and 50% are on full rides. It's a scouted academy, not a traditional tryout club, but it's worth understanding as part of the PA landscape.

Strong Competitive Clubs: DPL, USL Academy, GA ASPIRE, and NPL

These clubs compete in tier-2 national or regional leagues. They offer structured competitive pathways without the full cost and travel demands of ECNL or MLS NEXT.

What this tier looks like: Annual costs typically range from $2,000 to $4,500. Travel is mostly regional (the Northeast and mid-Atlantic), with some national showcase opportunities depending on the league. These clubs are a strong fit for players developing toward top-tier play or for families who want competitive soccer without the full commitment and cost of ECNL or MLS NEXT. See our how to choose a club guide for a decision framework.

Lancaster's depth is remarkable. Four Lancaster-area clubs hold national or regional league affiliations at this level: Keystone FC (DPL + Girls Academy), Lancaster FC (USL Academy Boys), Lancaster Inferno (USL Academy Girls), and FC Dutchmen (NPL). For a mid-size city, that's an unusually strong competitive scene. You can browse all Lancaster clubs on ClubScout.

Reading United AC connects to the professional USL League Two team, providing one of the few direct professional-to-youth pathways in Central PA.

Competitive Clubs: EDP and TNL

This is where most of Pennsylvania's 73 affiliated clubs compete. EDP (50 clubs) and TNL (33 clubs) form the backbone of competitive play in eastern PA. Many clubs hold membership in both leagues simultaneously.

With so many clubs at this level, here's a representative sample organized by region. For the full list, browse all Pennsylvania clubs on ClubScout.

Note: Western PA has very few EDP or TNL clubs in our data. The competitive structure in the Pittsburgh region runs through WPYSA rather than EDP. This is one of the key differences between eastern and western PA soccer.

This is the entry point for most families getting into competitive club soccer in Pennsylvania. Annual costs at this level are typically $750 to $2,500. See our budget guide for strategies to keep costs under $3,000.

Cost Overview by Tier

What you'll spend annually depends almost entirely on the competitive tier. Here's a rough breakdown for Pennsylvania clubs:

Tier Typical Annual Cost What Drives the Cost
MLS Academy (Union) Substantial scholarships (50% full rides) YSC Academy partnership, training, travel, equipment
Top tier (ECNL, MLS NEXT, GA) $3,000 - $6,000+ National travel, year-round training, showcase fees
Strong competitive (DPL, USL Academy, NPL) $2,000 - $4,500 Regional travel, 2-4 tournaments, extended season
Competitive (EDP, TNL) $750 - $2,500 Mostly local/regional travel, 1-2 tournaments, seasonal

These are club fees only. The actual annual spend is typically 40-60% higher once you add tournament travel, gear, winter training, and other extras. Common add-ons to budget for:

  • Uniform kits: $100-$400 (typically on a 2-year replacement cycle)
  • Tournament fees: $20-30/player at lower tiers; often included at higher tiers
  • Winter indoor training: $80-$120 if not included in annual dues
  • Travel to away games: Highly variable. EDP travel is mostly regional; ECNL/MLS NEXT includes national travel

See our full cost breakdown for the complete picture, or our budget guide if you're trying to keep costs manageable.

Philadelphia area premium: Clubs in Chester, Montgomery, and Bucks counties tend to be at the higher end of these ranges, consistent with the higher cost of living in the Philly suburbs. Central PA and Pittsburgh clubs generally run lower.

Tryout Season

Most Pennsylvania clubs hold tryouts between late March and June for the following fall season. Here's the general timeline:

  • March-April: Top-tier clubs (ECNL, MLS NEXT) may hold early identification sessions or invite-only training
  • April-May: Most competitive clubs open tryout registration
  • May-June: Main tryout window across all tiers
  • June-July: Late tryouts, roster finalization, and waitlist movement

Some clubs hold secondary tryouts in December/January for midseason roster adjustments, but the primary window is spring.

What to expect at tryouts: Arrive 15 minutes early, bring water, wear any color jersey (no specific requirements at most open tryouts), and expect 60-90 minutes of technical drills, small-sided games, and full-field play. For a complete preparation guide, see How to Prepare for Club Soccer Tryouts.

Important for 2026: US Youth Soccer is switching from January 1 birth-year cutoffs to August 1 school-year cutoffs starting August 1, 2026. Spring 2026 tryouts will build rosters under the new age group structure. This may affect your child's age group, as players born January through July will likely move up one age group. See our age group change explainer for full details.

Check our tryout calendar for upcoming tryout dates at Pennsylvania clubs.

How to Choose the Right Club

With 73 affiliated clubs in the state (and 200 total programs), the right choice depends on your child's age, level, location, and your family's budget and schedule tolerance.

By age:

  • U6-U8: Location and coaching matter most. Don't chase league names at this age. See our age-by-age guide for what to prioritize at each stage.
  • U9-U12: Look at the club's development pathway. Do they have teams at multiple levels? Do players move up within the organization? How to evaluate a coach matters more than the league at this stage.
  • U13+: League affiliation starts to matter for exposure and college recruiting. This is where the tier distinction (ECNL/MLS NEXT vs DPL vs EDP/TNL) becomes relevant. Pennsylvania has a large number of D1 college soccer programs (Penn State, Temple, Drexel, Villanova, Pittsburgh), and coaches actively recruit from ECNL and MLS NEXT clubs. See our college recruiting guide for how league choice connects to the recruiting process.

By priority:

  • Highest competitive level: Top-tier clubs (ECNL, MLS NEXT, GA)
  • MLS pathway: Union Academy pipeline (FC DELCO, PA Classics, Beadling SC)
  • Strong competition, manageable cost/travel: DPL, USL Academy, NPL clubs
  • Competitive development, budget-friendly: EDP and TNL clubs
  • College recruiting exposure: See our college recruiting guide
  • Girls' top-tier pathway: See ECNL vs Girls Academy

The cross-border factor matters. Eastern PA families, especially in Bucks and Burlington-adjacent areas, should consider New Jersey clubs. See our Northern NJ club guide and Central NJ club guide for options across the river. Pittsburgh families near the Ohio or West Virginia border may find options in those states as well. And families in the Lehigh Valley may find NYC metro clubs within reach.

PIAA allows dual participation. Pennsylvania high school athletics (PIAA) generally allows students to play both club and high school soccer, though fall schedules may conflict. This is a real factor at the top-tier level. Girls Academy mandates that players participate in high school soccer. ECNL leaves it up to individual clubs. MLS NEXT generally does not allow it.

For a full decision framework, see our How to Choose a Club Soccer Club guide. Not sure where to start? Try our Club Finder quiz, enter your zip code, age group, and priorities and we'll suggest clubs near you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many club soccer clubs are there in Pennsylvania? ClubScout lists 200 clubs in Pennsylvania, 73 of which have verified league affiliations. The rest include recreational programs, camps, academies, and clubs whose league status we haven't confirmed yet. Browse all Pennsylvania clubs.

What's the most common league in Pennsylvania? EDP is the dominant league in eastern PA with 50 clubs competing. TNL (33 clubs) is the second most common. But this is almost entirely an eastern PA story. Western PA runs through WPYSA with a different competitive structure.

How much does club soccer cost in Pennsylvania? Anywhere from $750/year at the entry competitive level to $6,000+/year at the top tier (ECNL, MLS NEXT). The Philadelphia Union Academy offers substantial financial aid through YSC Academy (over 80% of students receive scholarships). Philadelphia-area clubs tend to be at the higher end; Central PA and Pittsburgh tend to run lower. See our full cost breakdown.

When are club soccer tryouts in Pennsylvania? Most clubs hold tryouts between late March and June. Top-tier clubs may start as early as late March. Check our tryout calendar for specific dates, and read our tryout preparation guide for what to expect.

Can my child play high school soccer and club soccer in Pennsylvania? PIAA generally allows it, but the real question is whether your club's league allows it. Girls Academy mandates high school participation. ECNL leaves it to clubs. MLS NEXT generally does not allow it. EDP, TNL, NPL, and most regional leagues have no restrictions. See our ECNL vs Girls Academy comparison for more detail.

What's the difference between eastern PA and western PA for club soccer? They're essentially two different states for soccer. Eastern PA (EPYSA) runs through EDP, TNL, and Mid-Atlantic ECNL conferences. Western PA (PA West Soccer) has its own competitive structure with strong Girls Academy and MLS NEXT representation through Beadling SC. The boundary between the two associations runs roughly along the Susquehanna River corridor.

Is there an MLS academy pathway in Pennsylvania? Yes. The Philadelphia Union Academy in Chester participates in MLS NEXT and offers substantial financial aid through YSC Academy (over 80% of students receive scholarships). Three other PA clubs hold MLS NEXT membership: FC DELCO (Wayne), PA Classics (Manheim), and Beadling SC (Pittsburgh). FC DELCO also competes in ECNL-RL, making it the top boys development club in eastern PA outside the Union Academy itself.

Should my eastern PA kid consider New Jersey clubs? Possibly. Bucks County families are a short drive from Central NJ clubs, and Delaware County families may find South Jersey options accessible. NJ has 148 affiliated clubs including PDA (ECNL, MLS NEXT, NAL), and many NJ clubs compete against PA clubs in EDP and TNL anyway. It comes down to practice location and commute.

Is there financial aid for club soccer in Pennsylvania? Many clubs offer payment plans, sibling discounts, and need-based financial aid, but availability varies widely. It's always worth asking. Most clubs would rather have a committed player on a payment plan than lose them over cost. See our budget guide for specific strategies.

What's the difference between rec soccer and club soccer? Rec soccer is seasonal, low-cost ($90-$500), and focuses on participation. Club soccer (also called travel soccer) involves tryouts, higher costs, licensed coaching, and league play against other clubs. For a full comparison, see Recreational vs. Travel Soccer.
