Club Soccer in Albany and the Capital District: A Complete Guide for Parents (2026)

TL;DR: The Albany Capital District has 10+ club soccer programs on ClubScout across Albany, Schenectady, Saratoga Springs, Colonie, Clifton Park, and East Greenbush — and the competitive depth here runs deeper than most parents expect. Black Watch Premier (Albany) is the top boys development pathway, competing in ECNL Boys — full national-level competition. Girls have three DPL options: NY Rush, Rush NY - Albany, and FC Dutchmen Premier (Schenectady). Alleycats Soccer Club (Colonie) competes in ECNL Regional League Girls. For competitive-but-not-national-pathway play, Saratoga-Wilton Soccer Club, Capital Elite FC, and Clifton Park Soccer Club cover the EDP and TNL tiers. Based on ClubScout data from 10+ clubs across the Capital Region. This guide covers factual information only — no rankings, no subjective claims.

How This Guide Works

We're not ranking these clubs or making subjective judgments about quality. Every family's situation is different — what matters is finding the right fit based on your location, your child's age and competitive level, and your family's schedule and budget.

For each club, we list factual information: location, leagues, age groups, cost where we have it, and program details from our data. Use this as a starting point, then visit clubs, watch practices, and talk to current parents. Our guide on how to choose a club covers what to look for, and our coach evaluation guide has specific questions to ask.

For families new to club soccer, our recreational vs. travel soccer guide explains the differences, and our age-by-age guide covers what to expect at each stage. If cost is a factor, see our club soccer budget guide. For other New York areas, see our Westchester and Hudson Valley guide and NYC Metro guide. For the full statewide picture, see Club Soccer in New York.

National-Level Club

Black Watch Premier

Location: Albany, NY (trains at Colonie and Latham) Leagues: ECNL Boys Gender: Boys Age Groups: U12–U19

Black Watch Premier Football Academy is a nonprofit club that has served the Capital Region since 1996. They compete in ECNL Boys — one of the two top national boys league structures alongside MLS NEXT. ECNL Boys competes in a Northeast conference with travel against clubs from across the region.

The club trains four days per week with a player-centric, technical philosophy described as "attack-minded." Steve Freeman serves as Technical/Academy Director and Founder. Ricardo Vaz Tê is the Technical Director. The staff also includes a dedicated Director of Goalkeeping (Dylan Martin) and a Director of Mental Performance (Dr. Cristina Fink) — an unusual depth of specialty staff for a Capital Region club.

Primary training facilities are at Christian Brothers Academy (CBA) in Colonie and Kiwanis Park in Latham, with additional access to the CBA Dome for indoor training and the SUNY Schenectady Athletic Complex. Open trials for the 2025-26 season were announced with ECNL-RL trial sessions starting in June.

NY Rush is affiliated with the Rush Soccer network, one of the largest youth soccer organizations in the country. Rush NY - Albany

Location: Albany, NY Leagues: DPL Gender: Girls

Rush NY - Albany is a second DPL-affiliated girls program in Albany, also connected to the Rush Soccer network. Our data shows NY Rush and Rush NY - Albany as two separate entries. FC Dutchmen Premier

Location: Schenectady, NY Leagues: DPL, EDP Soccer Gender: Coed Age Groups: U12–U19 (premier); rec programs starting age 3

FC Dutchmen Premier — also known as FC Dutchmen Surf — is one of the largest clubs in the Capital District. Founded in 2005, the club has grown to 800+ players across more than 115 teams. Their premier programs compete in DPL (girls) and EDP Soccer (boys and girls) alongside a full recreational ladder starting at age 3.

The club recently opened "The Warehouse," an indoor training facility that runs programming through the winter months — a meaningful advantage in upstate New York. Primary outdoor facilities are at DiCaprio Park (3420 E Lydius St, Schenectady) with additional access to Afrim's Sports locations.

Tryouts are held at DiCaprio Park each June, with boys and girls tryouts on separate days across a three-week window. Younger age groups (2017–2012 birth years) try out from 5:45–7:00 PM; older players (2011–2007) from 7:15–8:30 PM. Supplemental tryouts are offered in July.

The club's development model emphasizes four pillars: Technical, Tactical, Physical, and Psychological.

For how DPL fits in the girls landscape, see DPL vs ECNL. For EDP's place in regional competition, see our EDP guide and the EDP vs NECSL comparison.

That kind of facility depth across the whole Capital Region means shorter commutes depending on where you live.

For how ECNL-RL compares to regional leagues, see ECNL-RL vs EDP vs NECSL and our ECNL guide.

Understanding the Capital District Soccer Landscape

More Depth Than You'd Expect

The Capital District's competitive soccer scene is routinely underestimated by families moving into the area. One full ECNL Boys club, three DPL girls programs within 20 miles of each other, an ECNL-RL girls club, and multiple EDP and TNL programs — that's a national-pathway presence that rivals metro areas several times Albany's size.

Boys at the national-pathway level have Black Watch Premier (ECNL). Girls at the development national level have three DPL options (NY Rush, Rush NY - Albany, FC Dutchmen Premier) plus Alleycats for ECNL-RL. Below that, EDP through Saratoga-Wilton and FC Dutchmen, TNL across Capital Elite, Ballston Spa, and Saratoga-Wilton. There is real depth here.

Boys Pathway: ECNL to What?

Black Watch Premier is the top boys national-pathway club in the Capital District and competes in full ECNL Boys — not ECNL-RL. That's meaningful: ECNL Boys is the same national league tier as clubs in Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. For boys at that level or aspiring to it, BWP is the local option.

There is no MLS NEXT club in the Albany metro in our current data. Families with boys at or approaching MLS NEXT-level play will need to look south — the closest MLS NEXT programs are in the Hudson Valley (FC Hudson Valley in Salt Point, Fox Soccer Academy in Warwick). See our Westchester and Hudson Valley guide. For how ECNL and MLS NEXT compare, see MLS NEXT vs ECNL.

Below Black Watch, FC Dutchmen Premier fields boys teams in EDP, and Saratoga-Wilton also competes in EDP. The CDYSL (Capital District Youth Soccer League) is the foundational regional league for most clubs at younger ages.

Girls Pathway: Genuine Depth at the Development Tier

Albany's girls club soccer has an unusual concentration of development-level national options. Three clubs in DPL within a 20-mile radius gives families real geographic and programmatic choice — something you rarely see in markets this size. Add Alleycats SC for ECNL-RL and you have four national-pathway options for girls across two distinct tiers.

There is no Girls Academy or full ECNL Girls club in the Capital District in our current data. Families whose daughter is approaching that level should look at programs in the Hudson Valley or greater metro New York. For sorting through the girls pathway options, see DPL vs ECNL and Girls Academy vs DPL.

NY Rush vs. Rush NY - Albany: What's the Difference?

Our data shows both NY Rush and Rush NY - Albany as separate DPL entries in Albany, both connected to the Rush Soccer network. The distinction isn't fully clear from our enrichment data — they may serve different age groups, different parts of the Capital District, or represent the same organization under different registrations. Before making a decision, contact both clubs to understand age coverage, training locations, and how they're structured. Our how to choose a club guide has the right framework for evaluating options side by side.

Afrim's Sports: The Facility Infrastructure Behind Capital District Soccer

Several Capital District clubs — Alleycats, Clifton Park SC, Saratoga-Wilton — train at Afrim's Sports facilities, a network of fields and indoor domes across the region (Colonie, Bethlehem/Glenmont, Latham, and Albany). Afrim's has become the infrastructure backbone of competitive soccer in this area, hosting NCAA regional finals and ACC soccer. If your child ends up at more than one club over the years, odds are they'll spend time at an Afrim's facility.

CDYSL and the Regional Ladder

The Capital District Youth Soccer League (CDYSL) is the governing competitive league for most youth soccer in the region. It's the foundation most players start in at younger ages before advancing to EDP, TNL, or national-pathway programs. Clubs like Albany Soccer Club, Clifton Park Soccer Club, and Greenbush Youth Soccer Club operate primarily within the CDYSL structure.

Tryout Season

Most clubs in the Capital District hold tryouts in June for the following fall season, with deferred tryouts available in August-September for players who missed the June window. Black Watch Premier announces ECNL trial sessions starting in mid-June. FC Dutchmen Premier holds tryouts at DiCaprio Park across a three-week June window. Saratoga-Wilton holds team placements each June at Gavin Park in Wilton.

Check individual club websites and the ClubScout tryout calendar for current dates. For what to expect, see our tryout guide.

Cost

The Capital District has more public fee data than most regions we cover, though national-pathway clubs still tend not to publish fees:

Level Range Notes
CDYSL rec/entry competitive $65–$750/year CPSC rec and Club tiers
TNL / EDP (regional competitive) $500–$2,000+/year Saratoga-Wilton published these ranges
DPL / ECNL-RL (development national) $3,000–$6,000/year Estimated; contact clubs directly
ECNL Boys (Black Watch Premier) $4,000–$7,000+/year Estimated; not published

Upstate New York's lower cost of living relative to the NYC metro tends to translate into somewhat lower club costs at comparable league levels. For a full breakdown of what goes into club costs, see our travel soccer cost guide and budget guide. Families with multiple players should check our multiple kids guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an MLS NEXT club in Albany?

No. There is no MLS NEXT club in the Albany Capital District in our current data. For boys at that level, the nearest MLS NEXT programs are in the Hudson Valley — FC Hudson Valley in Salt Point (Dutchess County) and Fox Soccer Academy in Warwick (Orange County). See our Westchester and Hudson Valley guide.

What is Black Watch Premier's league?

Black Watch Premier competes in ECNL Boys — full ECNL, not the Regional League tier. This is confirmed in our league database. ECNL Boys is one of the top two national boys leagues (alongside MLS NEXT). BWP is the only club in the Capital District at this level.

What's the difference between NY Rush and Rush NY - Albany?

Both are DPL girls programs in Albany connected to the Rush Soccer network, and they appear as separate entries in our data. Contact both clubs directly to understand the age groups served, training locations, and how the programs differ. It's possible they serve different parts of the Capital Region or different competitive tiers within the Rush structure.

Are there any girls national-level clubs (ECNL or Girls Academy) in Albany?

No. The Capital District has DPL (one step below Girls Academy) and ECNL Regional League Girls (one step below full ECNL), but no full ECNL Girls or Girls Academy club in our current data. Families whose daughter is at that level should look at programs in the Hudson Valley or NYC metro area.

What about clubs in Troy or Watervliet?

Our current data doesn't show clubs headquartered in Troy or Watervliet specifically — though Alleycats Soccer Club trains at Lansingburgh Senior High School in Troy and covers the tri-city area through its Afrim's facility network. For a comprehensive search by distance from your home, use the ClubScout search tool with your zip code.

What leagues do most Capital District clubs use?

The Capital District Youth Soccer League (CDYSL) is the foundational regional league. Above that, clubs ladder into EDP (FC Dutchmen Premier, Saratoga-Wilton), TNL (Capital Elite, Ballston Spa, Saratoga-Wilton), DPL for national-pathway girls, and ECNL Boys at the top tier for boys.

What to Do Next

  1. Match to the right tier first. Boys at the national-pathway level: start with Black Watch Premier (ECNL). Girls at national-pathway level: compare NY Rush, Rush NY - Albany, FC Dutchmen Premier, and Alleycats. Competitive regional: Saratoga-Wilton, Capital Elite FC, Clifton Park SC, or Ballston Spa.
  2. Check ClubScout profiles. Every linked club name above takes you to their full profile with contact info, parent reviews where available, and current details.
  3. Attend tryouts. Most clubs run tryouts in June. See our tryout guide for what to expect.
  4. Talk to current families. Ask about actual weekly schedule, tournament travel, and total costs beyond anything published.
  5. Read reviews. Parent reviews on ClubScout give you an unfiltered look at what life inside each club is actually like.

If your child is newer to competitive play, start with recreational vs. travel soccer and our age-by-age guide. Considering a switch from a current club? The when to switch clubs guide covers what to watch for.
