TL;DR: San Jose and the surrounding South Bay have 15 clubs on ClubScout with confirmed league affiliations, and the problem here is the opposite of most metros. There is no shortage of top-tier options — there are too many, packed too close together. Six clubs hold an MLS NEXT place, five hold an ECNL Boys place, and five hold a Girls Academy place, all inside roughly 30 miles of freeway. That density is rare. It means a South Bay family choosing between two national-league clubs is making a much finer distinction than a family in most of the country, and the deciding factor is almost never league name. This guide lists facts, not rankings. No club is "best" — the right one depends on where you live and which pathway your player is actually being offered.
Are you a club director in San Jose or the South Bay? Parents across Santa Clara County are searching for program information every tryout season, and fee transparency is the hardest thing for them to find in California. Claim your free ClubScout profile to verify your details, publish your cost ranges, and respond to parent reviews.
How This Guide Works
We are not ranking these clubs. In a market this dense the deciding factors are commute, the specific coach your kid would get, and which tier of a club's ladder they are offered — not which club has the most league logos on its homepage. For each club we list what we can confirm and flag where our data runs thin. Use it as a starting point, then visit, watch a session, and talk to current parents.
Our guide on how to choose a club covers the framework, and the coach evaluation guide has the questions worth asking at every tryout. New to this? Start with recreational vs. travel soccer, the age-by-age guide, and the youth soccer glossary — California uses league names that do not appear anywhere else in the country.

The thing to understand before you compare anything. There are three separate ladders running through this list, and clubs blur them on their own websites. National ECNL and ECNL Regional League are different leagues — nine of the clubs here hold an ECNL RL Boys place and only five hold a national ECNL Boys place. Pre-ECNL is a feeder tier below both, generally U9 through U12. When a South Bay club offers your player "our ECNL program," ask which of the three they mean. The travel, the cost, and the commitment are materially different. ECNL RL vs EDP vs NECSL covers where the regional tier sits.
The Clubs
San Jose Earthquakes
Location: San Jose, CA Leagues: MLS NEXT, National Academy League Gender: Boys (academy)
The youth academy of the MLS club. Like every MLS academy, the top age groups carry no club fee — travel and gear only — and it is the hardest roster in Northern California to make. MLS academy entry is identification-based rather than open-tryout, so ask how the scouting process works instead of waiting for a tryout listing to appear. Our record confirms the two league places and little else; program structure and age groups are worth confirming directly.
Bay Area Surf
Location: San Jose, CA Leagues: MLS NEXT, ECNL Boys, ECNL Girls, NPL, Pre-ECNL Girls, ECNL RL Boys, ECNL RL Girls Gender: Coed
Seven confirmed league places, more than any other club in the metro — a national platform on both the boys and girls sides, plus the regional and feeder tiers underneath. On paper that is a complete ladder inside one organization, which matters if you have two kids at different levels or a player who might move up or down a tier without changing clubs.
One honest caveat: our enrichment for this club is thin. The website crawl returned an unrelated business, so we have no confirmed founding year, staff list, training sites, or fee information. The league places are verified; treat everything else as a question for the club. For a club holding this many places at once, the single most useful question at tryouts is which specific team your player is being offered.
Almaden FC
Location: San Jose, CA (Almaden area fields) Leagues: MLS NEXT, Girls Academy, NPL Gender: Coed
A South Bay club running competitive and recreational programs year-round, roughly mid-July through mid-June, with a pathway from rec entry up to the national leagues. It also fields a USL League Two pre-professional men's team, and per the club it is a founding member of the North Western Conference of the Girls Academy League alongside Santa Cruz Breakers FC.
The tryout process is described more clearly than at most clubs here: competitive-style sessions with technical drills, 1v1s, and small-sided games, grouped by birth year and gender, with results communicated within a week and players not selected pointed toward the recreational program. Attending both days is encouraged but not required. Knowing that in advance is worth something — it is the part of tryouts that causes the most parent anxiety.
De Anza Force
Location: San Jose, CA Leagues: MLS NEXT, NPL, NorCal Premier Soccer Gender: Coed
Serving players from age 5 through high school for more than 25 years, with a ladder that starts at a Force Futures entry program. The club's strongest documented feature is college placement — an annual College Signing Night and a recruiting seminar, with large recruiting classes year over year. Brandi Chastain is on the coaching staff.
That last detail is worth a caveat we apply everywhere: a decorated playing career does not make someone the right coach for your particular 12-year-old. Watch the session your kid would actually be in. Player ID sessions run in January for MLS NEXT and February for the girls' programs, which is earlier than most families expect — see college soccer recruiting if placement is the reason you are shopping.
Silicon Valley Soccer Academy
Location: Palo Alto, CA Leagues: MLS NEXT, Girls Academy Gender: Coed
Top-tier on both sides — one of two clubs in this guide holding MLS NEXT and Girls Academy together — with nothing recorded beneath it. That shape matters. A club with no regional or feeder tier has nowhere to place a player who is not ready for the national level, and nowhere to move them if the fit is wrong mid-season. Ask what happens in that case before you commit. Our data beyond the two league places is thin; confirm age groups, training sites, and fees directly.
MVLA
Location: Mountain View, CA Leagues: ECNL Boys, ECNL Girls, Pre-ECNL Boys, Pre-ECNL Girls, ECNL RL Boys, ECNL RL Girls Gender: Coed
The most symmetrical structure in the metro: national ECNL, the regional league, and the Pre-ECNL feeder, on both the boys and girls sides. Six league places covering three tiers twice over. For a family with more than one player, or one who will be in this system for eight years, that internal ladder is the real product — you can move tiers without changing clubs, coaches, or drive. Our record is thin on facilities and staff, so confirm training locations for your specific age group.
Los Gatos United
Location: Los Gatos, CA (Union Middle School) Leagues: ECNL Boys, Girls Academy, Pre-ECNL Boys, Pre-ECNL Girls, ECNL RL Boys, ECNL RL Girls Gender: Coed
Six league places spanning the national, regional, and feeder tiers, wrapped around a genuinely broad community program: fall and spring rec leagues, a NorCal Super Rec league, summer camps, a goalkeeper academy, winter futsal, and a referee program. For west valley families in Los Gatos, Saratoga, and Campbell, this is the club where a kid can start at 5 in rec and still be there at 18 without the family ever shopping again — which is worth real money and real Tuesday evenings.
Santa Clara Sporting
Location: Santa Clara, CA (282 Brokaw Road) Leagues: ECNL Boys, Girls Academy, Pre-ECNL Boys, ECNL RL Girls Gender: Coed
Structured explicitly by age: development programs for boys and girls 12 and under, then advanced training at 13 and older, plus a men's program for 16 and up. The board and coaching staff are unusually well documented for a club this size, and the leadership has been stable enough that several surnames repeat across roles — a community club in the real sense, not a franchise.
The two sides of this club sit on different ladders, which is easy to miss. Ask which one your player would be on, and what the step above and below it looks like inside the club.
Stanford Strikers FC
Location: Menlo Park, CA Leagues: Pre-ECNL Girls, ECNL RL Boys, ECNL RL Girls Gender: Coed
A mid-Peninsula club at the regional tier with a Pre-ECNL feeder on the girls' side. Our data confirms the three league places and little else — treat the affiliations as verified and everything else as a question for the club. For families in Menlo Park, Atherton, and Palo Alto who want competitive play without the national-league travel budget, this is the nearest option.
JSC Soccer Club
Location: Redwood City, CA Leagues: ECNL RL Boys, ECNL RL Girls Gender: Coed
Regional league on both sides, based in Redwood City. Our record is thin beyond the affiliations. For mid-Peninsula families this and Stanford Strikers FC are the two closest regional-tier clubs, which makes the choice between them a commute-and-coach question rather than a league question.
San Jose Rush
Location: San Jose, CA (San Jose High School; Kathleen MacDonald High School; Dolores Huerta Middle School; Morgan Hill Sports Complex) Leagues: ECNL RL Boys Gender: Coed
Part of the national Rush network, with the widest spread of training sites in the guide — East San Jose high schools plus Morgan Hill, roughly 25 minutes further south. For South County families in Morgan Hill and Gilroy that southern site is the difference between a manageable evening and an impossible one, so ask which site your age group trains at before anything else.
Rush runs multiple open tryout sessions through the year rather than one window, typically across May, split by age band. The club also runs international training trips, which are the kind of optional line item that quietly doubles a season's cost — ask what is optional and what is expected.
ALBION SC Silicon Valley
Location: Redwood City and San Mateo, CA Leagues: Development Player League Gender: Coed
Two Peninsula locations inside the national ALBION network, serving rec through high school, with a full-time college director supporting placement. Tryouts have been open to players born 2007 through 2020 — an unusually wide band, including kids who have never played.
One thing to read carefully: the ALBION network describes a pathway that includes Girls Academy and MLS NEXT tiers across the organization nationally. The confirmed league place for this Silicon Valley club is the Development Player League. If a top-tier team is discussed at tryouts, ask specifically which club and which location it plays for.
Just Outside the South Bay
Burlingame Soccer Club (Burlingame) holds MLS NEXT, NPL, ECNL RL Boys, and ECNL RL Girls places, and carries the best-documented staff of any club in this guide — an executive director with a USSF A License and a coaching-director diploma, an MLS NEXT director with a USSF A License who coached at UC Berkeley, USF, and Grand Canyon and played for four MLS clubs, and a dedicated director of the college pathway. Programs run from ages 2 through 18. It is also the only club here that publishes any fee at all: $735 for the 12-week, 24-session Juniors Academy and Technical Development Program, with no prorated refunds for missed sessions. That is a development-program fee, not a competitive season fee. More than 750 players tried out last season for very limited spots; tryouts are in May with the schedule posted in April.
1974 Newark FC (Newark) holds ECNL Boys, Girls Academy, Pre-ECNL Boys, and ECNL RL Boys places. It sits on the East Bay side of the Dumbarton Bridge — a reasonable option for Fremont and southern Alameda County families, and a bridge-toll-and-traffic question for everyone in San Jose proper. Our data beyond the league places is thin.
Sheriffs FC (Hayward) holds an ECNL RL Boys place, training across Ashland, Cherryland, and San Lorenzo fields plus turf stadiums at College of Alameda and Merritt College. The technical director holds a USSF A License and a USSF Academy Director's License, with 16 years as an academy director and college and professional coaching behind him. The club began as free-to-play and its current fee structure is not published — worth asking about directly if cost is the binding constraint, because a club with that history is more likely to have a real answer than a boilerplate one.
What Club Soccer Costs in San Jose
No San Jose or South Bay club on ClubScout publishes a competitive season fee. We checked every record in the region. The ranges below are modeled from comparable programs nationally, not scraped from local club sites, and you should treat them as a planning envelope rather than a quote.
| Level | Estimated Annual Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| MLS academy (U13+) | Travel and gear only | The MLS club academy age groups |
| MLS NEXT (fee-based) | $5,000–$10,000+ | Full national program, travel-heavy |
| ECNL / Girls Academy | $5,000–$9,000+ | National showcases, year-round |
| NPL / DPL | $3,000–$5,500 | Regional plus some multi-state events |
| ECNL RL | $2,500–$4,500 | Regional conference play |
| Pre-ECNL (U9–U12) | $1,500–$2,800 | The feeder tier, paid |
| Recreational | $200–$600 | Where several clubs here start at age 4 or 5 |
These are totals including kit ($150–$400 in year one), tournament entries, and family travel — not dues alone. Two Bay Area notes. First, "regional" here is not local: a NorCal conference weekend can put your team in Sacramento, Fresno, or the Central Coast, and the national leagues fly. Second, the Bay Area's cost problem is rarely the dues line — it is the third practice a week that turns into 90 minutes of 101 or 880 traffic each way, every week, for years. For the full breakdown, see our budget guide. If you have more than one player, multiple kids in club soccer is the one to read first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which San Jose club is best for boys players?
We cannot rank them, and any guide claiming to is overstating what the data supports. What the data says: six clubs in this guide hold an MLS NEXT place — San Jose Earthquakes, Bay Area Surf, Almaden FC, De Anza Force, Silicon Valley Soccer Academy, and Burlingame Soccer Club. Five hold a national ECNL Boys place: Bay Area Surf, MVLA, Los Gatos United, Santa Clara Sporting, and 1974 Newark FC. Below that, nine hold ECNL RL Boys places. Watch a training session before you decide.
Which San Jose club is best for girls players?
Five clubs hold a Girls Academy place: Almaden FC, Silicon Valley Soccer Academy, Santa Clara Sporting, Los Gatos United, and 1974 Newark FC. Two hold an ECNL Girls place: Bay Area Surf and MVLA. Underneath, seven hold ECNL RL Girls places and four hold Pre-ECNL Girls places. See ECNL vs Girls Academy for the pathway comparison and our girls club soccer guide for a broader starting point.
Why do so many South Bay clubs hold so many league places at once?
Because the market is dense and clubs compete by covering every tier rather than specializing. Bay Area Surf holds seven league places, MVLA and Los Gatos United hold six each. The practical consequence for a parent: the club's name tells you almost nothing about what your kid is being offered. A player at a six-league club could be on a national team flying to showcases or on a regional team playing in Modesto, and both are "playing for that club." Get the specific team and league in writing.
When do South Bay clubs hold tryouts?
Earlier than most families expect, and not on one schedule. De Anza Force begins MLS NEXT player ID sessions in January and girls' ID sessions in February. Burlingame Soccer Club holds tryouts in May with the schedule posted in April. San Jose Rush runs multiple open sessions through the year. ALBION SC Silicon Valley has held spring-season tryouts as early as the preceding November. Check each club's site individually — there is no regional window here.
How much does the commute really matter?
More than league tier, for most families. The clubs in this guide sit inside roughly 30 miles of each other, which sounds trivial and is not: that same stretch is 101, 880, 280, and 17 at 5:30 PM. A club 12 miles away can be a 50-minute drive three times a week. Before you commit to anything, drive the actual route at actual practice time on an actual Tuesday. Families who leave a club mid-pathway most often name the drive, not the coaching.
My kid isn't ready for a national-league club. What are the options?
Plenty, and that is the real advantage of this market. Nine clubs here hold ECNL RL Boys places and seven hold ECNL RL Girls places — competitive play at a regional travel footprint. Below that, Los Gatos United and Santa Clara Sporting both run development programs for younger players, and Almaden FC, San Jose Rush, and Los Gatos United all run recreational programs alongside their competitive teams. Starting a tier lower at a club with a ladder is almost always better than starting a tier too high somewhere without one. See recreational vs. travel soccer.
What about clubs not listed here?
Our directory holds additional Bay Area organizations whose records are still pending review, and they are not linked above. One approved record — FC Golden State Force, carrying MLS NEXT and National Academy League places — is listed in our data at San Jose, but we could not corroborate a South Bay presence for it, so we have not placed it on this map. If you encounter it locally, confirm the location and the specific program directly. If you are weighing a move from a current club, see when to switch clubs.
What to Do Next
- Find out which tier you are actually being offered. National ECNL, ECNL RL, and Pre-ECNL are three different leagues with three different budgets, and several clubs here hold all three. Ask before you plan anything else.
- Match the club to your side of the valley. West valley: Los Gatos United. Mid-Peninsula: MVLA, Stanford Strikers FC, JSC Soccer Club, ALBION SC Silicon Valley. Central: Santa Clara Sporting. South and East San Jose: Almaden FC, San Jose Rush.
- Ask to join a session, not just watch one. Many clubs will accommodate a trial session if asked. A session your kid actually plays in tells you more than any website.
- Ask for the all-in annual number in writing. No club here publishes a competitive season fee. Ask what is excluded — kit, tournament entries, summer training, international trips, state registration.
