TL;DR: Greater Houston has 11 clubs on ClubScout with confirmed league affiliations, and the shape of the market is different from what the club websites suggest. Three hold MLS NEXT places: Houston Dynamo, Houston Rangers, and Houston Futsal Club. The Dynamo academy is the free one, as every MLS academy is at its top age groups. On the girls side, two clubs hold a Girls Academy place — Houston Surf Soccer Club and RISE Soccer Club. Challenge SC is the metro's ECNL Girls club. But the number that actually explains Houston is this one: eight of the 11 hold an ECNL Regional League place. That is the tier most Houston travel families will live in, and it is where you should start reading. This guide lists facts, not rankings. No club is "best" — the right one depends on your side of a metro that runs 60 miles across.
Are you a club director in Houston or the surrounding metro? Parents across Greater Houston are searching for program information every tryout season, and fee transparency is the hardest thing for them to find in Texas. Claim your free ClubScout profile to verify your details, publish your cost ranges, and respond to parent reviews.
How This Guide Works
We are not ranking these clubs. In a metro this large the deciding factor is usually which side of town you live on, not which club has the most impressive website. For each club we list what we can confirm — league affiliations, program structure, facilities, leadership — and flag where our data runs thin. Use it as a starting point, then visit, watch a session, and talk to current parents. Our guide on how to choose a club covers the framework, and the coach evaluation guide has the questions worth asking at every tryout.
New to this? Start with recreational vs. travel soccer and the age-by-age guide. For the statewide picture, see Club Soccer in Texas, and for what any of this costs, the Texas cost breakdown — no Houston club publishes a season fee, so that guide models the ranges. If you are weighing a move down the I-10 corridor, the Austin guide covers Central Texas.

A note on the ECNL Regional League. If you are new to Texas, this is the single most important thing to understand. ECNL RL is a distinct league from ECNL proper — a regional conference tier below the national platform. Eight of the 11 Greater Houston clubs hold a place in it, on both the boys and girls sides. When a Houston club's website talks about "our ECNL program," find out whether your player is being offered a national ECNL team or an ECNL RL team. The travel and the cost are materially different. See ECNL RL vs EDP vs NECSL for where the tier sits.
The Clubs
Houston Dynamo
Location: Houston, TX (Houston Sports Park) Leagues: MLS NEXT, National Academy League Gender: Boys (academy)
The youth academy of the MLS club, fielding U14 through U18 teams and training at Houston Sports Park. Like every MLS academy, the top age groups carry no club fee — travel and gear only. It is also the hardest roster in the metro to make, and MLS academy entry tends to be identification-based rather than open-tryout, so ask how it works rather than waiting for a tryout listing.
Houston Rangers
Location: Houston, TX (Tanglewood Middle School; Paul D Rushing Park) Leagues: MLS NEXT, MLS NEXT Academy Division, DPL Gender: Coed
The only club in the metro holding an MLS NEXT Academy Division place alongside its MLS NEXT place, plus DPL on the girls side. The technical staff carries real professional experience — Technical Director Josh Gardner played 11 years in MLS and won two MLS Cups. Worth remembering that a decorated playing career does not automatically make someone the right coach for a 12-year-old, so watch a session. Per the club, the boys program also competes in the Texas Academy League, which our data does not carry. Tryouts are at Tanglewood Middle School, with ID nights at Paul D Rushing Park.
Houston Futsal Club
Location: Houston, TX (South Houston area) Leagues: MLS NEXT Gender: Coed
Houston Futsal Association runs an unusual model: a "2-in-1" pathway pairing indoor futsal training with outdoor club soccer, on the theory that tight-space technical work transfers. Founded in 2017, serving U5 through U19 across four facilities in the South Houston and Pasadena area. It offers open tryouts and free trial sessions — worth knowing, because a session your kid actually plays in is the most useful evaluation tool a parent gets, and not every club offers one. For Pasadena, Deer Park, and southeast-side families, this is the nearest MLS NEXT option.
RISE Soccer Club
Location: Houston, TX Leagues: ECNL Boys, Girls Academy, ECNL RL Boys, ECNL RL Girls, Pre-ECNL Boys Gender: Coed
RISE has the broadest confirmed footprint of any Houston club — five league places spanning both top-tier pathways and the regional tier beneath them. A 501(c)(3) non-profit formed in 2017 from the merger of Houston Express SC and Eclipse SC, with Texans SC joining in 2019. Programming runs from recreational at U4 through the elite pathway, which makes it a genuine cost-managed ladder: a family can enter low and move up without changing clubs. The directors across its ECNL, ECNL RL, and Girls Academy programs hold USSF A licenses.
One thing to ask about directly: per a club announcement, U11, U12, U13, and U19 boys and girls can play in its highest leagues at no cost. We have not independently confirmed the terms and no general fee schedule is published, so treat that as a question for the club rather than a rate to plan around. Tryouts run for 2026–27 across all age groups U7 through U19.
Houston Surf Soccer Club
Location: Houston, TX Leagues: Girls Academy, DPL Gender: Girls
One of two Houston clubs holding a Girls Academy place, paired with DPL underneath it. That combination matters structurally: a player not ready for the full Girls Academy commitment has a step inside the same organization rather than having to leave. Our data on this club is thin beyond the affiliations, so confirm program structure, age groups, and training sites directly. For the pathway comparison, see ECNL vs Girls Academy and Girls Academy vs DPL.
Challenge SC
Location: Tomball, TX and the northwest metro Leagues: ECNL Girls, NPL, ECNL RL Boys, ECNL RL Girls, Pre-ECNL Boys Gender: Coed
Challenge SC is the metro's ECNL Girls club and its most geographically distributed organization, with locations across the Tomball, Spring, Klein, Woodlands, Cypress, Kingwood, and Humble corridor, plus Bryan/College Station. Programming spans recreational at U5–U10, Youth Academy at U8–U10, Select at U11–U19, Pre-ECNL at U9–U12, and ECNL at U13–U19.
Because it runs this many sites, the most useful question at tryouts is which one your child's age group actually trains at. The club's city field is unset in our data; its headquarters is in Tomball.
Houstonians FC
Location: Houston, TX (five campuses) Leagues: ECNL RL Boys, ECNL RL Girls Gender: Coed
Founded in 1996, serving ages 5 to 19 with Grassroots, Advanced, and Elite tiers. The structural advantage is campus coverage — five locations spanning north, south, west, Woodlands/Conroe, and Spring/Tomball, explicitly organized to cut family drive time. Alumni include professionals Memo Rodríguez and Sebastien Ibeagha.
SG1 Soccer
Location: Katy and west Houston, TX Leagues: ECNL RL Boys, ECNL RL Girls Gender: Coed
SG1 serves over 900 players across 65+ competitive teams, running a pathway from a Rising Stars entry academy up to ECNL RL, across three campuses in Katy and west Houston. For families in Katy, Cinco Ranch, and the western suburbs, this is the closest ECNL RL option with a dedicated local footprint.
Imperial Soccer Club
Location: Sugar Land, TX (Lost Creek Park) Leagues: ECNL RL Boys, ECNL RL Girls, Pre-ECNL Boys Gender: Coed
A 501(c)(3) non-profit serving ages 3 to 19 from a single home base at Lost Creek Park, with a pathway running recreational, Select, Academy, and Pre-ECNL. Staffing is more specialized than most clubs this size: a dedicated college placement coordinator, a licensed physical therapist leading strength and conditioning, and a full-time goalkeeper trainer. That last one matters if your player is a keeper — it is usually the first specialty cut at clubs without one, and the private sessions families buy instead run $30–$70 each. Evaluations are held at Lost Creek Park.
Dynamos Soccer Club
Location: Cypress, TX Leagues: ECNL RL Boys, ECNL RL Girls, Pre-ECNL Boys, Pre-ECNL Girls Gender: Coed
One of the few Houston-area clubs holding all four regional and feeder places — ECNL RL and Pre-ECNL on both the boys and girls sides. For northwest metro families in Cypress, Jersey Village, and Bridgeland, that is a full U9-through-U19 ladder without leaving the neighborhood. Our data is thin beyond the affiliations, so confirm training sites and tryout timing directly.
Pearland Soccer Club
Location: Pearland, TX Leagues: ECNL RL Boys, ECNL RL Girls Gender: Coed
The southern-suburbs ECNL RL option, serving Pearland, Friendswood, and the south metro. Our data confirms the league places but little else — treat the affiliations as verified and everything else as a question for the club.
Just Outside the Metro
Coastal Premier Alliance FC (Beaumont) holds ECNL RL Boys and ECNL RL Girls places, serving Southeast Texas including Baytown and Mont Belvieu. Director of Coaching Roy Lassiter, a USSF A-License holder and former professional, oversees its U8–U10 Elite Academy. Beaumont is roughly 85 miles east of downtown Houston — a real option for Baytown and east-side families, a non-starter for everyone else. Per the club, it partners with the Houston Dynamo Academy; confirm what that involves directly.
What Club Soccer Costs in Houston
No Houston club on ClubScout publishes a competitive season fee. That is not an oversight on our part — it is the Texas norm, and we checked every record in the state. The ranges below are modeled from comparable programs, not scraped from Houston club sites.
| Level | Estimated Annual Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-ECNL (U9–U12) | $1,500–$2,800 | The paid pathway commonly starts at U9 in Texas |
| ECNL RL | $2,500–$4,500 | Regional conference play; where most Houston families land |
| DPL / NPL | $3,000–$5,500 | Regional plus some multi-state events |
| Girls Academy / ECNL | $5,000–$9,000+ | National showcases, year-round |
| MLS NEXT (fee-based) | $5,000–$10,000+ | Full national program, travel-heavy |
| MLS academy (U13+) | Travel and gear only | Houston Dynamo academy age groups |
These are totals including kit ($150–$400 in year one), tournament entries, and family travel — not dues alone. Two Houston-specific notes. First, "regional" travel in Texas is not local travel: an ECNL RL conference weekend can put your team in Dallas or San Antonio, four hours away, without crossing a state line. Second, the Texas pathway starts at U9 via Pre-ECNL, which is three or four years earlier than in most states — budget for a longer runway, not a bigger annual number. For the full breakdown, see our budget guide and travel soccer cost guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Houston club is best for boys players?
We cannot rank them, and any guide claiming to is overstating what the data supports. What the data says: three clubs hold an MLS NEXT place — Houston Dynamo, Houston Rangers, and Houston Futsal Club. RISE Soccer Club is the metro's only ECNL Boys club. Below that, eight clubs hold ECNL RL Boys places. Watch a training session before you decide — use the framework in our how to choose a club guide.
Which Houston club is best for girls players?
Two clubs hold a Girls Academy place: Houston Surf Soccer Club and RISE Soccer Club. One club holds an ECNL Girls place: Challenge SC. Below that, eight clubs hold ECNL RL Girls places and two hold DPL. Houston Surf is the girls-focused option; RISE and Challenge fold girls into larger coed organizations. See ECNL vs Girls Academy for the pathway comparison and our girls club soccer guide for a broader starting point.
What is ECNL RL and why do so many Houston clubs have it?
It is a conference tier below national ECNL, and it is the Texas structure generally — statewide, 25 of 36 clubs carry an ECNL RL place, far more than in any other state we have covered. In Houston the tier below the national platform is ECNL RL, not EDP or a state select league. Read ECNL RL vs EDP vs NECSL before you compare a Houston club to one you knew elsewhere.
When should my child start competitive club soccer in Houston?
Several Houston clubs run programs from U4 or U5 recreationally, with competitive entry commonly around U8 to U11. What is distinctive here is the Pre-ECNL feeder tier, which covers U9–U12. Four Houston-area clubs hold a Pre-ECNL Boys place: Challenge SC, RISE Soccer Club, Imperial Soccer Club, and Dynamos Soccer Club. Dynamos Soccer Club also holds a Pre-ECNL Girls place, and is the only Houston-area club that does. That is a formal, paying pathway starting at nine years old. It is a real program, not a verdict on your kid. See our age-by-age guide.
When do Houston clubs hold tryouts?
Texas tryout season generally runs April through June, and MLS NEXT and ECNL programs start earliest. RISE Soccer Club runs 2026–27 evaluations across U7–U19, and Houston Futsal Club offers open tryouts and free trial sessions year-round. Check each club's site — windows open and close fast. Our tryout preparation guide covers what to bring and what to expect.
How much does the commute really matter in Houston?
More than almost anything else on this page. Greater Houston runs roughly 60 miles across and traffic is the defining constraint. A club that is 25 minutes away on a Sunday morning can be 55 minutes at 5:30 PM on a Tuesday, three times a week, for years. Several clubs are built around this — Houstonians FC runs five campuses and SG1 Soccer runs three specifically to cut drive time. Map the actual route at practice time before you commit.
What if none of these clubs are the right fit?
Houston is a deep market, but if none fit, the statewide picture is in Club Soccer in Texas. Coastal Premier Alliance FC in Beaumont is an option for far-east families. Note that our directory currently lists additional Houston-area organizations whose records are still pending review and therefore are not linked here — the metro has more clubs than the 11 confirmed above. If you are weighing a move from a current club, see when to switch clubs.
What to Do Next
- Work out which tier you are actually being offered. National ECNL and ECNL RL are different leagues with different budgets. Ask before you plan anything else.
- Match the club to your side of the metro. Katy and west: SG1 Soccer. Sugar Land: Imperial Soccer Club. Cypress and northwest: Dynamos Soccer Club. South: Pearland Soccer Club. Tomball, Woodlands, and northeast: Challenge SC. Southeast: Houston Futsal Club. Metro-wide with multiple campuses: Houstonians FC and RISE Soccer Club.
- Take the free trial session where one is offered. Houston Futsal Club offers them outright, and many clubs will accommodate if asked. A session your kid actually plays in tells you more than any website.
- Ask for the all-in annual number in writing. No Houston club publishes fees. Ask what is excluded — kit, tournament entries, summer training, state registration.
